31 Surefire Clues He Likes You: Reading His Signals
When I was in 7th grade, I really liked this cute guy in my homeroom class. His name was Jim. I sat on the row of desks next to the wall, and there was one row of desks between us.
My friend Beth sat at the desk next to mine, and Jim was next to her. So what did I do? I asked my friend to give a note to Jim, “Do you like Sylvia?” He answered, “yes.” Then he asked if we could meet and sit together at the football game on Friday. My first date!
So, you could just have a friend ask the guy, or you could ask him yourself, right? I’ll tell you the secret to asking at the end of this article.
How can you find out if a guy likes you? There are some guys you just can’t read, and they aren’t going to tell you they like you. The good news is that you can read clues from a guy’s body language and figure out if he likes you.
There are certain things guys aren’t aware that they do when they like a woman. If you learn what clues to look for, you can read his body language and determine if he’s attracted to you.
Here is a list of 31 signals you can look for to figure out if a guy likes you. You can’t just rely on one or two signs. If he only does one of these things, it probably wouldn’t tell you much. But if he does a group of them, then you know he likes you.
Or, you can just ask your friend to give him a note and find out that way, LOL!

1. He smiles at you.
If you catch a guy smiling at you, it’s a pretty good signal he likes you. When you’re attracted to a person, a smile naturally breaks out. But how can you find out if it genuinely means something? Notice how often he smiles at you. If he appears to smile at you more than would seem usual, he probably likes you. If it seems like he smiles at you whenever your eyes meet, he probably does like you.
2. He holds eye contact with you.
If a guy maintains what feels like prolonged eye contact with you, even just a bit longer than would seem expected, he probably finds you attractive. Especially if the smile becomes a big grin at the same time.
3. You notice him gazing at you.
Have you ever noticed a guy gazing at you, and he abruptly turns away? If you see him once, it could be only a coincidence. But if it happens more than once, odds are he likes you.
Provided you don’t have food on your face, or you aren’t doing something silly, he’s likely into you.
4. He’s always around.
If a guy always seems to be walking near you, sitting beside you, or just seems to show up wherever you are, those are good signs that he is interested in you. He’s likely trying to find opportunities to get nearer to you.
5. He stands a little too close.
If you feel like a guy is intruding on your personal space just a little, this could be a significant sign that he likes you. Notice how close he gets to you when he’s around. If he’s a little nearer than he should be, he is probably attracted to you. If you move in a little closer and he doesn’t step back, it means he’s open to you. If he responds by coming even closer, you can be pretty confident he really likes you.
6. He leans in when you are talking.
If a guy leans in facing you when you’re talking to him, it’s a good sign he’s interested in you.
7. His legs or feet are pointed towards you.
When a guy is attracted to you, he may subconsciously point his legs or feet towards you. People are inclined to point their feet towards where they want to go or are interested in.
8. He stands more erect.
When a guy is interested, he may subconsciously stand more erect, puff his chest out, and suck his stomach in to seem more masculine. If a guy is slumping and suddenly straightens up when he sees you, it may mean he’s subconsciously trying to impress you.
9. He mimics your body language.
People tend to subconsciously mimic each other’s gestures and posture when listening to each other intently. If a guy imitates your body language, this could be a powerful indication of his attraction because he’s focused on you. Respond by leaning forward, stroking your hair, sipping your drink, or placing your chin on your hand. If he likes you, he might start imitating your gestures without even realizing he’s doing it.
10. He touches you.
If you notice a guy touching you a lot, he probably likes you. He may graze against your arm, pat you on the back, place his hands on your shoulders, brush his leg against yours, or give you a lot of hugs. The more physical contact, the more obvious it is that he likes you.
11. He raises his eyebrows.
If a guy responds to something you say or do by raising his eyebrows, it could mean he’s interested in you.
On its own, this probably isn’t enough to suggest if a guy likes you, as it might just be a friendly expression, so look for other signs too.
12. He grooms himself.
If a guy begins grooming himself when he notices you, he may be subconsciously trying to look good near you. If he starts to fix his hair, brush the lint from his clothes, or straighten his necktie, it may mean that he’s attracted to you.
13. He’s more shy or awkward around you.
If a guy acts shy or just seems awkward around you, he probably likes you. He’s probably anxious about creating a good impression.
14. He genuinely laughs at your jokes.
If he giggles at your jokes, even if they aren’t that funny, it’s a sign he likes you.

15. He shows off.
If a guy seems to show off a lot around you, he is probably attracted to you and is vying for your attention.
16. After he says or does something amusing, he looks for your reaction.
Imagine a guy telling a joke or being funny in a group, and everyone starts laughing. If he looks at you first to see how you react, it’s a signal that he likes you because he wants to be sure to impress you more than anyone else.
17. His behavior changes abruptly.
If a guy’s behavior changes as soon as you arrive, it may be a clue he likes you. It may mean he’s trying to impress you. If he’s with a group and he’s laughing or acting boisterous, he might suddenly get quiet when he sees you. Or he may have been reserved, and then he tries to impress you by abruptly getting louder and trying to become the center of attention.
18. He treats you differently.
Watch how a guy treats his friends or other girls. If he behaves differently around you, that could be a clue he likes you.
19. He’s protective.
If a guy likes you, he may act protective of you. An example is giving you his jacket if you’re cold. Or positioning himself in front of you to push away the crowd if you are walking through a crowded place.
20. His friends tease him when you’re around.
If his friends know he likes you, they may subtly mess with him when you’re around. Pay attention to how his friends behave around you. If they turn in his direction, smile at him, hit him in the arm, or snicker knowingly, they’re probably teasing him because they know he likes you.
21. He acts annoyed or envious when you talk to other guys.
If a guy keeps an eye on you and seems envious or irritated when you’re talking to another guy, he probably likes you. He may try to appear as if he’s not watching, but he’ll keep tabs on you to notice if you seem to like the other guy. He may even sigh or leave.
22. He keeps glancing at you while flirting with other girls.
If a guy’s scanning you while he’s toying with another girl, he probably wants your attention. He’s measuring your response to find out if you like him. What other reason could he have for looking at you when he’s flirting with someone else if he’s not into you?
23. He hangs around one-second longer.
When you’ve had a conversation with a guy, and he hesitates one second longer when he’s about to leave, it’s a clue he likes you. That one-second moment of hesitation could mean he was trying to decide if he should ask for your number or ask you on a date.
24. He takes one last look at you.
If a guy glances at you back over his shoulder after walking away from you, he probably likes you and wanted to take one last look at you. Perhaps he’s hoping you were looking at him too so he could gaze into your eyes one more time.
25. He can’t stop glancing at your lips.
Studies demonstrate that if a guy is checking out your lips, he’s attracted to you. Even if it’s subconscious, this is a sure-fire way to recognize a man’s attraction to you.
26. He responds thoughtfully to what you say.
If you are talking with a guy who responds with generic answers or short, abrupt replies, he probably doesn’t like you. However, if he leans in close and offers an extended, considered response, it means he was genuinely invested in what you said. He wants to give his sincere view to show you he cares about what you said. That means he likes you!
27. He’s interested more in listening to you than talking about himself.
If he spends more time asking about you and less talking about himself, he probably likes you! If he talks about only himself, not pausing to listen intently to you, he probably doesn’t. When he asks about your interests, aspirations, and life, you can be confident that he likes you!
28. He recalls details about past conversations.
If you see a guy for a second or third time and he brings up previous conversations, he likes you! That would tell you he’s been thinking of you since your last time together. Only men who genuinely appreciate you will remember what you’ve said in past conversations.
29. He’s playful around you.
If a guy is playful with you, it means he is relaxed around you. If he’s comfortable, that means he likes you! You have to like somebody to be comfortable around them.
30. He ignores his phone when he’s with you.
A guy is not invested in you if he is always preoccupied when he’s with you.
If he’s frequently checking his messages and flipping through his social media feed, it’s a no.
On the other hand, if he ignores his phone and pays total attention to you, he definitely cares about you a lot.
31. He compliments specific things about you.
What I mean is that he compliments something about you specifically. For example, if he likes you, he may say, “I really love that you care for animals because it shows that you have an honest and caring personality.”
However, if he compliments your clothes or your furniture, that’s not about you, is it?
The final piece of advice on these signals.
You need to take the signals in context and look for more than one signal. For example, a guy may smile at you because he smiles at everyone. Some wonderful people are like that. Someone splashes mud on their shoes and they smile.
If you’re interested in a guy and you think he may be interested in you, why not tell him you like him and why. The worst case is that he is flattered because who wouldn’t be? You can say it in a nonthreatening lighthearted way. “I like you, you’re funny.” or “I like you. You’re very confident and cute.”
Don’t make a serious production of it and watch what happens.
Good luck in your future romance and happiness!
Sylvia
